Exit Questions
- 1. would simply tell the parent that “technology integration” is nothing more than teachers using technology in the classroom to get come across to the student because this day in time technology is the number one way to children learning.
- 2. When teaching a phonics lesson the way I would integrate technology would be to create a game on the computer and allow the students to get on the computer and play the game which would be to practice their letters and sounds.
3. A. Hardware-monitor; software-Excel B. Internet Explorer C. dogpile D. Spread Sheet-Excel; Database-Access
4. I think it is important to teach students the rules and laws concerning plagiarism.
5. Yes, if you don’t know what you are doing and No, if you do know what is required of you and your partner does not.
6. Having the students go on the teacher’s wed page to find out their assignments as well as having them post their assignments on blogger.
7. I would suggest that the instructor make it a requirement that the class responds to the tweets within a certain time period.
8. I really enjoyed creating my own teacher web page and I definitely feel confident enough to use it on my own. And I would also encourage other teachers to create one and use it.
9. I think we could have worked a little more with Microsoft Word especially the newer version. By doing so as future teachers we would already know just how the program works.
10. Again I just loved creating my own teacher web page and will use it in my future classroom.
Adaptive Technology- Case Study
It is very important to keep your student’s learning styles in mind when planning instructions; therefore to meet the needs of students in my class I would use tactile activities for those who are kinesthetic learners. For the visual learners I would incorporate different graphicsso they can see through pictures what the lesson is about. And for the auditory learners I wouldlecture to them as normal and allow others to listen to audio tapes of the lesson through headphones.
Scene 2
I think it would be extremely helpful to have a reading specialist to collaborate with because two heads are better than one and the fact that this person specializes in reading they have more experience in dealing with students with reading problems. They can also provide me with some ideas on how to meet the needs of my students that may have reading problems. By meeting their needs the students will have a better understanding of what they have read and can be productive readers.
Scene 3
Marilyn uses graphic organizers to map out the organization of the book by labeling the characters, setting, problem, solution, and the virtue exhibited by the characters. She also maps out the three fifteen minute activities that the students are going to be working on. By using the graphic organizers Oscar was able to view the large pictures instead of having to deal with the hassle of trying to read and write about what was expected of him; therefore making the activity fun for him.
Scene 4
My experience with using the web to locate information has been relatively helpful, especially when there have been times when I had no clue of the subject matter that I needed to research. There has been one time when I have encountered a problem when using a Wed Quest, such as, one time in a workshop just as it may be in a classroom there were not enough computers in the room for me to have my own personal one and I could not do research on my own.
Scene 5
Having students work in small groups rather than whole groups is beneficial because the students will pay closer attention and this will cause them to retain more information. Another benefit would be the fact that they would have that little bit of teacher-guidance, where the teacher can actually go from group to group helping the groups meet their needs. Also, smaller groups can motivate students to learn from their peers and the students are more likely to gain the openness of reading aloud more.
Personally, I think Oscar would not have been as productive as he was had he worked one-on-one with Juanita. Because of the fact he was visually impaired, being able to work in a small group with his peers gave him the peer motivation he needed to read the text more independently.
Scene 6
Marilyn’s use of technology addresses her students’ needs by first allowing them to visit a Web Quest using Eric Carle’s website, so they could collect biographical data about the author/artist. Then she shared with them, the video, Eric Carle : Picture Writer to show them his artistic approach to painting the pages illustrated in his books. This would be beneficial for Oscar. Finally, the students were able to create their own iMovies. This made the students proud of their work.

"Sexting"
Teens have taking instant messaging to another level known as "sexting" in doing so; they could be placed at legal risk. As a parent I have an obligation to myself and my child to monitor how he or she uses the cell phone and computer that I pay the bill for. We should let our children know that their bodies are precious and belongs to them only and that it is inappropiate to take nude pictures of themselves and post them on the internet or let anyone view them for that matter. We should also inform them of the danger of participating in this act, such as being exposed to a pedophilers, and even facing legal issues. As an educator I would reiterate to my students what I hope their parents have already told them, and take it a step futher by showing them the video about the teen who is facing legal issues and also view articles pertaining to "sexting".
PBS Video

Personally I think educstional videos can be effective learning tools if they are used as a form of reinforcement to skills that have already been introduced. Kids neeed to be taught first and then watch videos in order to see the connection of what they have learned.
The Primates Stress Club & Angry at Heart Responses
2. The "aggressors" that are pleaging my life are having to work full time, pay for school and just trying to make sure all assignments are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
3. The baboon seems to be "high hostile", while on the other hand is "angry".
4. The finds suggest to me that I could be putting my health at risk because of the "aggressors", and it's just not worth it.
5. The negative medical effects of a "high hostile" and "angry" person is that both are more likely to develop heart diease due to the stress.

The story of "The Princess Doctor"
Long, long ago in a land far, far away, there lived a king and queen who loved each other dearly. They had two sons, but the king desperately wanted a daughter. He wanted a girl in the image of her mother, who was kind, beautiful and beloved by her kingdom. The king’s wish soon came true and the couple was blessed with a baby girl.
The king remembered his wish and upon her birth he told the queen all about it. The infant was just as he imagined she would be. She was beautiful just like her mother, a calm baby who hardly ever cried and always smiled. The queen was happy about her daughter’s gentle nature but how she longed for more for her child. Instead, she wished that her daughter grow up to be strong and caring, as smart as any man. She prayed for her to have a big generous heart and to be able to think for herself.
As the child grew, the queen became weaker. She wished more and more that her daughter be strong in body, mind, and spirit. Slowly, the queen began to notice that, although her daughter had a sunny and quiet nature, she was also strong willed. She possessed a strong sense of right and wrong and was not easily swayed by others. An intelligent child, she taught herself reading, writing and arithmetic from her brother’s old lessons. At only six years old, she would read her tired mother beautiful stories to make her laugh. Her little voice would lift with excitement and giggles, causing her mother and everyone around her to join in the happiness. The child also seemed to take care of the entire castle. She would run from end to end as fast as her little legs could carry her. She would give hot drinks or cold cloths to those who were sick and feverish, pat them on the back if they had a cough. Whenever a doctor was called for her dear mother, she would become his helper, or at least as much as she could for one so tiny. She would do anything to make anyone feel better.
Although she tried hard, the little one could not understand why her mommy became more and more tired. Nothing seemed to help. Then one gloomy morning the eight year old girl lost her mother and the angels gained one more.
As the girl grew and grew, her father, the king, began to get more and more frustrated with her behavior. She was very different from what a princess was supposed to be. Though she still possessed a quiet and calm nature, she seemed to be very uninterested in her duties as a princess. She would skip her finishing lessons, run around in working garments instead of her fine dresses, and, most importantly, she seemed uninterested in finding a husband.
Many suitors were paraded before her, princes, dukes, noblemen, captains of sea and even kings. But she remained only concerned with helping others, especially the sick. She even began to disappear when suitors came calling, only to be found later nursing a sick child to health or studying science with the monks, or teacher, at the monastery.
Soon came the princesses eighteenth birthday. Her father had tried and tried to make the princess become more involved in her duties but nothing had worked. As a last attempt, he decided to throw a grand ball in her honor. He invited princes and young kings from all over the world. He bought her beautiful gowns and had special tiaras made in her honor. He thought there would be not way for her not to fall in love. That night, he was sure, she would find her prince. The night of the ball arrived and the castle was in frenzy. They had one very large problem. The princess could not be found anywhere.
The ball was a disaster. The princes and young kings were so disappointed that they all left. The king became very angry. He sent soldiers out among every corner of the kingdom to find her. They searched for days and days with no luck. When they had almost given up hope they found her in the most unlikely of places, in the servant’s part of the castle. The princess had been working day and night to save her most trusted friend, her nurse. The nurse had taken care of her and her brothers after her mother had gone to the angels and the princess loved her dearly. Now it seemed that the angels wanted her too. When the soldiers found the princess she was crying tears of frustration as she tried and tried to save the nurse. In the end, all she could do was ease the nurse’s pain as she went to join the angels.
The soldiers felt extreme sadness for the young girl and what she had lost but they had to follow the king’s orders. Once she was before the king, he unleashed his anger. He told her she was either to marry the man of her choice or be sent to a nunnery. She cried as she told him that she was invited to study to become a physician. Her father was shocked. He told her that princesses do not deal with the sick, or do a man’s work, especially his daughter. She told him that she could not do what he asked. He told her that she must leave his kingdom immediately.
Years and years passed and she missed her family dearly. Her father and his grumpiness, her brothers, and their loveable teasing, but she knew how important her work was. Instead of being too sad, she focused on her studies. Eventually, she got the highest marks in her class and graduated with honors. She began to forget about her life as a princess. She lived in a nearby orphanage as a doctor caring for the children and the people in the village.
One day, she received a letter from her kingdom asking that she come right away. A war had broken out and the people desperately needed medical help. She went straight away to help them. She saved many lives and helped the wounded. She kept spirits up with her beautiful stories and tried to keep her patients laughing and happy.
Then one day, her father became badly injured in the war and she was called to save him. It took hours and hours but finally he seemed to be better and fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, he told her how sorry he was and how much he loved her.

Go Green!!!
Glenda and Yohance believe that getting students and staff at the USM Gulf Coasts campuses to drink more tap water would prove to be a worthwhile Go Green cause. Efforts to get consumers to drink more of their local tap is growing around the country, and this is reflected in campaigns such as Tap into the City (2009), which is hosted out of New York City and the national Think Outside the Bottle (2009) campaign which challenges corporate dishonesty in promoting the benefits of drinking bottled water, while stimulating support and less apprehension towards the public water infrastructure. Think Outside the Bottle offers a student guide on its website that describes various actions that students at campuses nationwide are taking to reduce public dependence on bottled water, such as increasing awareness, setting up taste tests challenges and decorating campus water fountains.
Tap Anxiety
Concerns around tap water are understandable; very few of us pause to think about what we may be drinking, when just needing to satisfy a quick thirst, and especially when we’re home where there are apparent safety nets around us. Yet several contaminants like lead, chlorine, arsenic and the bacterium E. coli can be found streaming directly from our faucets. Often people become unaware of these contaminants until health scares are exposed through media outlets. For this reason many have chosen to drink bottled water as a safe and viable alternative. Bottled water is yet somewhat inexpensive, costing no more than the average soda, and considerably less when purchased in bulk. But before forming a permanent reliance on bottled water, consumers are urged to find out what’s exactly in their local tap water, for water conditions vary regionally. This can be accomplished by obtaining the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which is a report generated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This report shows the condition of all water systems in a local region and is available to customers yearly. Individuals can also conduct personal test for less than $20 in some cases, which provides quick and accurate results for a lot of contaminants as well as the total hardness of the water (Consumer Reports, 2007).
Bottled Water Waste
There is growing alarm around plastic elimination from products such as bottled water, for because of their slow decomposition, plastic water bottles aren't in the best interest of the environment. There is no denying that recycling programs are a more commonplace, yet according to the EPA more than 75 percent of water bottles still clog up our landfills. Another issue with bottled water has been the limited regulation in place, whereas the EPA strictly regulates tap water. In essence if bottle water is not filtered properly it can contain some of the same contaminants common to tap water (Collins, 2008). Because of improved filtrations processes and lessening costs, along with governmental oversight, consumers and industries should employ tap water filtration systems to improve upon the longevity of our national resources.
Local Tap Support
The primary purpose for supporting tap is to ensure that the water supply is properly filtered. This is accomplished through regulation, but can be supplemented by attaching additional filters to the water units. Tap water filtration requires minimum effort and proves to be less costly in the long run while ensuring the customer is getting clean and healthy drinking water. According to a 2007 WebMD article, common filter types include faucet mounted units which can range in price from $20 to $60, counter-top units, ($50 to $300), undersink units ($55 to $350), and reverse-osmosis filters ($160 to $450). Filter features to consider along with costs, is their susceptibility to clogging, the amount of water filtered, plumbing modifications, replacement requirements and maintenance, and the amount of water waste generated. Several under sink and reverse-osmosis models use simple screw-on plumbing connections instead of saddle valves, which require drilling into the cold water supply line, and can leak. Some filters feature electronic emitting signals that conveniently remind the user of the replacement time. A faucet-mounted model, such as the Brita Disposable, avoids filter replacement maintenance because the entire unit can be discarded each year. Some filters possess an activated carbon filter with certifications that guarantee the device would eliminate most water contaminants (Consumer Reports, 2007). Tap water filtration supports resource conservation by lessening the amount of bottled water waste added to the environment.
The water fountain system in the hall of the Jackson County campus did have an Aqua Pure under sink filter attached. This added confidence in the quality of the drinking water. Yet, to persuade others to drink tap more, or refill water bottles using tap, the fountain attachments and bowls of the fountain should be cleaned consistently, for an unsightly appearance deters usage. Replacing spouts regularly would be a worthy maintenance task causing individuals to drink from the fountains more. Also as shown from other student efforts, the fountains would probably attract more visits if posters and banners could be attached to nearby walls for visual support. Students can be directed to the fountain systems using campus email distribution when time for promotions is limited.
Another effort at promoting tap would be to encourage students and staff to purchase refillable bottles that could be customized with the college logo. It not only serves as a unique memento from the college experience, but also connects the participant with an ongoing notable cause. If not a campus bottle, individuals can easily purchase their own bottles for sometimes less than a buck at local dollar stores. For those who are even more cautious, there are water bottles that come with their own filters such as the Purity Sports Bottle (Aquasanah2o.com, 2009). These bottles are pricier and the filters can be replaced without tossing the bottle.
And for those diehards who would rather drink water from any other source than the tap, our final proposal is to install water dispensers on opposite sides of the campus halls or buildings. By doing so students, faculty, and staff can rest assured they’re getting crisp, clean and refreshing water. The cost for each dispenser and a five gallon bottle of water is relatively inexpensive. Kentwood dispensers cost roughly around $9.75 and a five gallon bottle of water is $7.49. Water is delivered every two weeks upon settling a monthly invoice, and the service is available at sites such as www.water.com (2009).
Conclusion
An important aspect of persuading more people to drink from the tap is getting the word out about the importance of conserving natural resources. Education is the key, and there is no better place to promote this awareness than from a prominent educational institution such as the University of Southern MS, which is a pivotal part of the Gulf Coast community.
